Checking it out

If I get the chance when I graduate from school to be the Head Geek at a small to mid-sized office that is looking to replace its technology, I will most certainly keep Ubuntu Linux at the top of my short list. I will do whatever it is that I can to  put that to use in my office, that much is for sure.

I do realize that there is a chance that I will have to work in a mixed environment at best at least until it can be demonstrated that Ubuntu can handle the tasks at hand.

With all that in mind, I have been operating a little array of laptops on my desktop with the range of OSes. Just recently, Google released its Desktop Search application for Linux which peaked my interest. I installed it on all my  machines and let Google at my data.

There have been some obvious and not so obvious differences based upon the platform. Only on Windows does Google offer the gadgets and whiz bang set of sharing results across computers. These results are only shared if you select them from the search. [NOTE: I have not looked at any paranoia or security aspects, nor do I care, at least about the paranoia, What is Google going to do with information about my boring life?]

Both the Mac and Linux search versions work pretty much the same, with the exception that the Mac version does not have to display its results in the web browse. There is a really handy app that comes for teh Mac called the Google notifier which lets me know when there is something coming up on my calendar or when there is new email in my account, and allows me to jump straight to those things. I am sure that there is some sort of applet that mimics this behavior in either GNOME or KDE, but I haven't found it or used it. This along with the Provider for Google Calendar extension that works with Sunbird or Lightning, just may get me to stop using Korganizer and Kontact altogether [NOTE: Or the ability to write new information to Google Calendar from within Korganizer needs to be implemented,I have lost my data for the last time!]
